In 2014 we chose to focus on wines made locally and we are proud to support wine producers from Norfolk and East Anglia. We have been promoting East Anglian Wines since then in the belief that the producers we have ended up knowing well have the passion, skills, and capabilities to challenge the best in the world.

As many may have seen English wines (and more specifically a Norfolk wine) achieved the highest accolade possible. the best wine in the world in the under £15, single grape variety category.

Decanter 19th May 2017

A still white wine made by Winbirri Vineyards near to Surlingham in East Anglia has won the Platinum Best in Show medal for best value white wine made from a single grape variety. That variety is Bacchus, a grape relatively untouched by most of the wine world but which has found a home in the fledgling English wine industry. Winbirri’s victory lays down a strong marker for English still wine, which has spent several years in the shadow of the country’s emerging sparkling wines.

Judges described Winbirri’s Bacchus 2015 as a ‘perfect aperitif wine’. They said that the wine has a ‘complex, oily nose with spice, elderflower, and citrus’. They added that it is ‘well-defined on the palate with grassy notes. Very elegant and delicate with a slight spritz and a long, clean finish’. Only 34 Platinum Best in Show medals were awarded at DWWA 2017 out of more than 17,200 entries.

The winery also tasted success with the same wine in 2016 after fellow producers in the UK industry named it their wine of the year.

EAST ANGLIAN WINES.

It's a relatively unknown fact that there are 57 Vineyards in East Anglia with 12 located in Norfolk. As The Norfolk Deli, we feel it is important to promote our local wine-producing artisans who are passionate about their produce.

A large variety of vines are cultivated in East Anglia; one of the premier vine growing regions of the UK. East Anglia's territory stretches over the sandy areas of the coast to sandy loams in mid-Suffolk and dense clays in the heart of Essex. These Vineyards produce over half the Bacchus grown in  Britain and a large proportion of Pinot Noir alongside other successful vine varieties including; Solaris, Madeleine Angevine, Reichensteiner, Huxelrebe, Schonburger, Pinot Blanc Pinto Gris and Seyval. The East Anglian Vineyards produce aromatic, elegant wines, winning more National Trophies last year than any other region. Many of our wines are critically acclaimed on a national and international level.

Winbirri Vineyard & Winery

We first started stocking Winbirri wines on the 20th May 2014. Located near Surlingham, Winbirri vineyard is one of the only in Norfolk to have a winery. This allows the vineyard to make its wine on-site. The dedication of the master winemaker is evident, all grapes are hand picked and the grapes are pressed over a 6 hour cycle. In fact, everything this vineyard does is done so as not to taint the quality of the wine. The results are clear to see as Winbirri Vineyards starts to collect awards for its wines.

Please note, due to unprecedented demand for Bacchus 2015 and the limited stock available we are no longer accepting online orders for this. Try some of the other marvelous wines lovingly made by the same vineyard. For example the Solaris or the 'New' Sauvignon Blanc.
